Day 5 at London Fashion Week SS14: By Poppy D
I can’t quite believe another London Fashion Week is over. I feel like I’ve *just* figured out the best route between Fashion Scout and Somerset House, mastered rainy day dressing and gotten used to the taste of the freebie ‘beauty drinks’ everywhere. All those frightfully important LFW skills mastered, right when I won’t need them for another six months! But before we crawled home to our beds to dream of Pearce Fionda sea shells and Giles rope braids there were some final shows to see.
My day started backstage at Tata Naka, where Bill Watson was heading up the TONI&GUY team. The first words I heard backstage were ‘ballet bun’, so I was very excited to see what they were working on. Tata Naka’s inspiration for the SS14 collection comes from the work of Sergei Diaghilev and his famed Ballets Russes. As arguably the most influential ballet company of the 20th Century, Diaghilev collaborated with the likes of Matisse, Picasso and even Coco Chanel to create the ‘visual art’ that the Ballets Russes became so famous for. Original Ballets Russes costumes were the starting point for the silhouettes of the SS14 Tata Naka collection, albeit with a very modern twist, and it was the same influences that Bill worked with to create the hair look. The hair was prepped with Extra Strong Mousse and, after a striking centre parting had been created, was pulled back into a tight, sleek ballet bun. HOWEVER! This was no ordinary bun, there had to be a modern twist…just as with the clothes! An elastic was tied around the bun to create a curved dent, almost like a peach, and heat was used to set this dent in to the bun. At the last moment before show time, the elastics were cut so you were just left with the perfect dent – but no evidence of how it got there! Lots of Hairspray and Shine Mist completed the look.
I left the ballerinas to head into the rain (sigh) to catch some more street style with Debbie Bragg. I’m still wholly impressed by how well people can dress in the rain…Do make sure you check out aaaaaaaall the street style pics from LFW on WIWT, there are some amazing outfits from classical couture to completely cray cray!
Next it was time to take a peek at what Chie Sato and her team were up to backstage at Lulu Liu. Who knew leaves and fishtails were perfect complements?! I still can’t get over how pretty this look was. I feel like I want to go out and collect some twigs for my own do! And on the catwalk? Just sublime.
Last up for the day was the FAD show, where it was in fact the Breakthrough Team doing the hair. And if this central, square knot braid is anything to go by – the future of the TONI&GUY Artistic Team is in safe hands! I can’t quite believe that another London Fashion Week is over. It’s been such an honour to work with TONI&GUY and label.m this season…I can’t wait to share the videos as they emerge too! You can find heaps of show hair vids here already though, the TONI&GUY.TV team edit super fast!
I hope you’ve enjoyed the last few days of posts and tweets and that you feel like you’ve had a little glimpse into the crazy world of backstage.
