Day 3 at London Fashion Week SS14: By Poppy D
Apart from some street style shooting at Somerset House, today was all about Fashion Scout for me. The day kicked off with a show I was really excited about – Kiev Fashion Days. I was so excited that I’d had kievs for dinner last night! (Yeah, not even kidding about that!).
Without wanting to bore you with my life story, I owe Eastern Europe a lot when it comes to why I ended up working in fashion. I’ve always been very interested in fashion, but for university I studied at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at UCL. Whilst my degree had me specialising in Eastern European economics and had nothing to do with fashion, it was studying with girls (and guys!) from CIS and CEE countries and being fascinated by their unique sense of style and the way they put their outfits together that made me really realise that fashion was where my passion lied. And a lot of the girls who influenced me were, indeed, from Kiev and Ukraine.
The Kiev Fashion Days show was a showcase of some of Kiev’s best young design talent. So what do you do hair-wise when the look needs to complement the collections of multiple designers? Well the answer is to go with something simple, which Grace Inzalaco and the TONI&GUY team did with a gorgeous poker straight look. Of course, simple and straight isn’t always easy, I think any of us who have ever wrestled with the straighteners before work or a big night out can attest to that! A pristine straight look is a design classic really, like a striking Calvin Klein jeans ad it will always stand the test of time…especially as so many of us simply can’t achieve the PERFECT straightness needed to grace the catwalk.
The hair was prepped with Volume Mousse in the main, though Extra Strong Mousse made an appearance too depending on the texture of the hair. It was applied from root to tip then blow dried smooth. Straighteners were used over the surface with Shine Mist and a bit of Hairspray at the end to complete the look. It looked gorgeous on the catwalk and complemented the range of designs on display at Kiev Fashion Days perfectly.
After watching the show I took a very quick glimpse at what Efi Davies and her team were up to backstage at Yong Kyun Shin. Erm, wow! And then it was a quick dash back to Somerset House to catch some street style shots and see the hair dos of “real” guys and gals that were attending the shows. Def head over to WIWT to see all the street style pics from LFW, there are some truly fab ones!
It was then a matter of running (sensible girls wear Nikes to LFW, not heels!) back to Fashion Scout to see what Richard Mannah and his team were up to backstage at Eugene Lin. I’d seen the Eugene Lin collection on rails before the models even arrived and having rifled through (can you blame me? The clothes were just sitting there!) I knew this was going to be a very special clothes. One thing that really stuck out was the juxtaposition of textures within the collection, with a real play between matte and shiny textures. I interviewed Eugene for TONI&GUY.TV and he explained that the inspiration for the collection came from the fabled Valkyries of Norse mythology. These female spirits of battle became swans with the aid of feathered cloaks – and legend has it that if one captures a Valkyrie whilst bathing in a river, they can extract a wish from her. So the clothing was indeed fit for a very stylish battle, with beautiful swan feather details in the form of prints and 3D textured screen prints. Everything came together stunningly. Richard managed to complement the collection perfectly by also playing with textures, just as the clothes had been treated in areas to create a shiny wet look – Richard used gel on the top of the head to ensure the girls really did look like they’d just emerged from bathing in the river. But just as the clothes played with texture, Richard ensured the rest of the hair was dry.
It was a very special show and, once again, I’m looking back at my day at London Fashion Week feeling like a very lucky lady indeed!
See you for more hair fun tomorrow – we’ve got GILES!!! Eeeeeeep!
